Description
The Archimedes’ Screw is an interactive module for a science playground that demonstrates how a rotating screw can lift materials. Inside the transparent chamber are a screw and plastic balls. As children turn the screw, the balls travel upward along its spiral surface. They can follow the movement through the chamber walls and see what happens when they change the speed or direction of rotation. Through hands-on play, children discover the principle behind mechanisms used to move water, grain and other loose materials. The module is suited to playgrounds where children can explore physics and learn how familiar mechanisms work by experimenting for themselves.
