Scientific Children Area Featuring a Dark Timber Play Complex

Client: Department of Capital Repair of the City of Moscow.

Objective: design a residential courtyard with an unconventional visual concept and a STEM-focused educational theme. The project required a high-contrast color scheme that would stand out against the typical surrounding architecture, alongside the integration of developmental interactive play equipment.

Solution: the project’s defining feature is its bold color palette. Dark laminated timber was selected for the primary play complex—a rare choice in urban landscaping, where clients typically favor lighter wood tones. The dark texture created a deep, graphic contrast with the vibrant blue and purple panels.

The space was designed with a rich thematic layout:

• Scientific & Educational Zone: the playground is equipped with educational modules designed to stimulate logical thinking and spark an interest in physics;

• Diverse Play Dynamics: the main complex integrates a tower with a tall tube slide, rope bridges, a climbing wall, as well as trampolines and carousels.

Result: an expressive and functional space was brought to life on Altufevskoye Highway, seamlessly blending active play with learning. The project demonstrated the impact of using bold color palettes and rich thematic concepts in urban landscaping.
