Rabbit Meadow Play Area at Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve
Client: City of Moscow.
Objective: To create a children’s play area in a historic park. The playground needed to follow the existing terrain, preserve open sightlines, and provide a variety of active play scenarios.
Solution: The concept is based on a shift in familiar proportions. Large sculptures of cabbages, pumpkins, and carrots alter children’s perception of scale, while rabbit figures support the Rabbit Meadow theme.
Orange mesh domes create semi-open spaces with tables and seating. Their transparent structure maintains clear views across the playground without visually overwhelming the landscape. Coloured rubber surfacing and artificial terrain bring the individual elements together into a cohesive composition. The contrast between wood, metal, mesh, and resilient surfaces stimulates tactile and visual perception.
Result: Kolomenskoye now features a themed play space that supports active, sensory, and quiet play. The unusual scale of the objects encourages imaginative play, while the open structures and low-profile forms maintain a strong connection with the surrounding park landscape.
